Video:  Autism Speaks

Zane doesn’t do the finger flicking (visual stimming) like one of the boys in the video, and he does have some communication, but he does escape and we are on constant vigil to always know where he is (I guess an advantage of a small apartment), and the tantrums / meltdowns looked all too familiar.  Although the sleep thing is relatively ok right now, I could really identify with the sleep issues too.  It was often so bad I couldn’t even tell people how bad it was.  I didn’t realize it was a part of this, just felt like I was an crappy parent.  I was also so sleep deprived at times that I couldn’t think straight.

At this point, truly our main issue is the communication deficits.  The only reason we have so much medical stuff lately is because they are doing a round of testing to make sure there isn’t another cause for his language delays.  Once the testing is over, it is likely that we will go back to hardly ever having to deal with medical issues.

Gosh so much of this reminds me of when Kieran was little – escaping the house so much I walked around on eggshells, 3am wakeups and tantrums…nak

I am so glad you are getting clear about what is going on, have a direction to go.  It sounds like you are adapting to the realization so very well.
